Classified's season opener a cancer benefit event

Ask anyone who this area’s top big band is. You don’t need to whisper. It’s not a secret. It’s Classified (Oh, wow, that’s clever. I kill me).

Classified will be coming out of its annual winter hibernation Friday night. But this season opener has special meaning for this all-star group of musicians, as they will be performing for the Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation’s annual fundraiser.

ON SCENE: Live music to help ring in the new year

Here we go again: it’s the time of year, time to enjoy that chubby cherub wearing nothing but a diaper and holding a champagne bottle like a pacifier.

But enough about my fashion choices. We’re talking about the New Year’s Baby ushering in 2017.

And to help us with that ushering, there is an assortment of music around for you to ring out the old and ring in the new. …

Special event planned to support people with developmental disabilities

The Arc of Madison Cortland and Building Futures Foundation will host A Night of Bourbon and Bidding from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Vernon Downs Event Center. The evening has been planned to support programs and services for people with autism, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injury and other developmental disabilities.

UTICA, NY - Runners, families, volunteers and the entire community gathered at the Stanley Theater tonight for the Boilermaker 2015 Concert.  For the second year in a row the Mohawk Valley band Classified headlined.  Along with the band, Utica Pops Orchestra and the Holy Cross Academy Student Choir from Oneida performed.

ALBANY – State Senator Joseph Griffo announced Friday that the Senate has confirmed Greeley Ford of the Mohawk Valley as a new commissioner to the New York State Liquor Authority.

Senator Griffo recommended Ford, who resides in Camden, N.Y., to the Governor to be considered for appointment as commissioner. …

Fun still had by small crowd at St. Anthony festival

UTICA — With a weekend of beautiful weather nearly behind the Mohawk Valley, St. Anthony and St. Agnes Italian Festival raged on for the final day Sunday.

But it may have been just a little too nice for people to head down to the church for the food, tunes and rides that have become expected at the annual event.

Musicians and fans reach out to kids

Last year’s Musicians for Shriners concert benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children might have fallen a bit below expectations of some people, the organizers included. That wasn’t the case this year when the second annual event, held Sunday, May 21, packed full the Kallet Civic Center in Oneida.

Soggy, yet spirited start to Saranac Thursdays

UTICA — As Classified’s first notes rang out across Varick Street on Thursday evening, dark clouds started to roll in and raindrops began to fall.

But that didn’t stop the crowds from pouring into this year’s first Saranac Thursdays at F.X. Matt Brewing Co. headlined by the band Classified, which is celebrating its 25th year together.

Boilermaker Post Race Party music lineup announced

UTICA — The music lineup for the July 9 Boilermaker Post Race Party features a local all-star band and disco-era singer Maxine Nightingale, best known for her platinum 1976 record, “Right Back Where We Started From.”

The lineup includes local musicians fronted by the regional band Showtime, featuring members from Gridley Page, Classified and others.

Musicians hit high notes to help kids

There are few causes better than those that help children with medical conditions.

A day-long concert Sunday fits the bill perfectly. Five local groups - Classified, Showtime, Paul Case Band, Mossback Mule Band and Mark Bolos Sr. - will perform between noon and 6 p.m. to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Kallet Winter Series warms the season

The chill of the winter was left at the door as the band Classified played a hot - and free - Thursday night show at the Kallet Civic Center in Oneida Feb. 16.

“We couldn’t be happier than to offer these free concerts to the community,” said Kallet board member Bill Dustin. …
